The Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that, although not widely known, offers unparalleled beauty for those seeking a natural environment. That's why more and more people are choosing it as their destination for a few days of relaxation.
But what are the best activities to enjoy in this dreamy location? If you're planning to explore this magnificent area of Galicia and still don't know what plans might surprise you, you can't miss out on all it has to offer. Here are 5 ideas to take your vacation in the Ribeira Sacra to the next level. Take note!
The 5 Best Activities in the Ribeira Sacra
1. Boat Trip through the Sil Canyons
The Sil Canyon is one of those places that make a visit to the Ribeira Sacra truly worthwhile. It’s a deep gorge of rock, water, and wonderfully crafted curves that will amaze you at first sight.
One of the best plans for a quiet afternoon with family is to admire this geographical wonder from the mountain top and enjoy the views. But if you're looking for a more intense and immersive experience, we highly recommend the catamaran ride.
A great plan could be to get a ticket for one of the regular trips that take place almost every day. You'll enjoy a lovely boat ride, during which you'll get so close to the shore that you can observe its forests, terraced vineyards, and some local wildlife, such as grey herons, deer, and even wild boars.
If you prefer and are willing to spend a bit more, you also have the option to rent a catamaran for yourself and your family or friends for a few hours. This way, for a small amount each (if you split the cost, of course), you'll enjoy maximum tranquility in a unique setting.
Additionally, you have the Miño River. It's one of the most famous and beautiful rivers in our geography, and we suggest a plan worthy of the most adventurous: daring to navigate it by kayak, with organized groups for all levels and ages.
2. Hiking Among Vineyards
As expected, this area of Galicia offers many options if you love hiking. You can (figuratively) get lost in its beautiful forests and mountains, following some magical trails.
Among the recommended routes is the Vineyards Trail of the Ribeira Sacra. It’s a medium-difficulty route, 12.3 km long, which you can complete in about 4 hours and 15 minutes.
You also can't miss the Augacaída-Castro de Marce Route. This trail is much shorter, at 2.42 kilometers and of medium difficulty. It will take you just 1 hour and 15 minutes, ideal to combine with other activities like a wine tasting at a local winery or a dinner.
On the other hand, if you prefer a somewhat easier route to do with children or pets, we recommend the route from Cibrisqueiros to San Cosmede. These two villages are connected by a beautiful 4-kilometer path, which will take you 1 hour and a half to walk. Upon arrival, the best of Galician rural gastronomy will be waiting for you.
3. Wine Tastings at Local Wineries
The Ribeira Sacra is one of the places with the richest winemaking culture in all of Spain. Not surprisingly, some of the oldest and most reputable wineries are found here. Therefore, we highly recommend diving into this vast world of vineyards and great wines.
Among the most notable options is Abadía da Cova, with a fantastic viewpoint and a guided tour where you'll learn all about a mystical place full of legends. Another key option is Alma das Donas Adega, a family winery where you can go with your children and even your pet. Finally, there's Finca Míllara, located in a fantastic and welcoming village with a great historical tradition.
To conclude your visit, we recommend a tasting of local products paired with a good wine, and if you fall in love with any, you can buy them at good prices in the local shops.
4. Visits to Historic Monasteries
This area of Galicia boasts some of the most beautiful and ancient Romanesque monasteries in the country, being the European point with the highest concentration of this type of architecture. Therefore, if you have even a minimal interest in history, you can't miss this opportunity.
Pantón is your best option for a tour of Galician Romanesque architecture. Start your journey in the town of Ferreira, near Monforte de Lemos and Ourense, to visit the Monastery of the Bernardas. This architectural ensemble belonged to the Cistercian Order and dates back to the 12th century.
From here, you can continue your route to San Fiz de Cangas. There you'll find a beautiful church, also from the 12th century. Inside the temple, you'll find capitals with animal drawings and vegetal decorations.
Further along, you'll reach one of the most interesting churches of Galician Romanesque, San Miguel de Eiré. This Benedictine order church has a beautiful north-side door with a chessboard-decorated arch. Inside, you'll also find mural paintings and a baptismal font.
To finish, visit the church of San Esteban de Atán, of pre-Romanesque order. Its simple pre-Romanesque interior from the 13th century will not leave you indifferent, as it is as marvelous as the place where this temple is located, near the Miño River.
5. Kayak Routes on the Miño River
If you are looking for a different experience, pure relaxation, and disconnection, you can opt for a bath in a thermal circuit. In Pantón, we recommend its fantastic spa where you can spend the day.
If you prefer natural hot springs, visit the Outariz hot springs, located on the banks of the Miño River as it passes through Ourense. There's also the Cenlle hot springs, a free site with a garden area and warm water pools. Lastly, the Muño da Veiga pools, also at the foot of the Miño and ideal for treating skin problems and feeling revitalized.
With all these recommendations, we are convinced that your experience in the Ribeira Sacra will be as magical and wonderful as you deserve. Now you just need to book your accommodation and enjoy your vacation.
